Colonoscopy Prep

Colonoscopy Prep - Gatorade/Miralax

The follow steps will prepare you for your procedure. Please report to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center's Endoscopy Suite at the time provided to you by our office.

  1. Stop taking aspirin, bufferin or Pletal one week prior to the exam. If you are taking any long term anticoagulants such as Coumadin, Plavix or Pradaxa, your prescribing physician should make the decision as to how long you should discontinue usage before your procedure.

  2. The day before your test you should take liquids only. You should follow the clear liquid list at the bottom of this page. Your prep should be taken at 4:00 p.m. Drink as much as possible to keep yourself hydrated.

  3. On the morning of your test you should eat or drink nothing prior to coming to the hospital. You should, however, take any blood pressure or heart medications that you normally would take in the morning with a sip of water. If you take diabetic meds using oral agents or insulin you should refrain from using these the morning of the test. Diabetic patients will have an early appt time at the hospital and the staff will monitor your sugar upon arrival. Please report to the 2nd floor Endoscopy Suite.

  4. Following the procedure, you will be returned to your room and discharged shortly thereafter. When you return home you may resume normal eating habits. You should experience some abdominal cramping and passage of flatus for the first day or so. However, if you experience severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or passage of blood in your stool, please contact me immediately day or night.

  5. If any tissue or a biopsy has been taken, we will call you concerning the results and soon as they are available; usually 1 week.

  6. Because you will be given intravenous medication during the procedure, New York State Law dictates that someone must drive you home.

  7. Follow-up examination will be decided by your personal doctor. Repeat colonoscopy should be done in 6 to 120 months depending on your results.
